Joaquin Torres had a great chance in the 22nd minute with a shot from distance but it was deflected off the hand of Red Bull keeper Carlos Coronel. The match went on despite the risk of a thunderstorm that was approaching the Montreal area.

Elias Manoel in the 25th minute had a chance in a one-on-one situation against James Pantemis who got the start tonight in goal but the Montreal keeper was able to make the save. Six minutes later it was Manoel again with another chance at goal but again was denied by Pantemis.

Romell Quioto had his first scoring opportunity in the 37th minute going in close on Coronel but his shot went right off his chest and stayed out. The visitors opened the scoring in the 43rd minute as Lewis Morgan was able to chip a ball past Pantemis to make it 1-0.

The first half ended with the New York Red Bulls up 1-0 going into the locker room.

Montreal fails to score

In the 49th minute, New York earned a free kick but it was punched away and out of danger by Pantemis as Montreal looked to get back in the game. The Red Bulls kept putting pressure on Montreal and Pantemis was sprung into action once again in the 58th minute but was able to make the save.

Five minutes later head coach Wilfried Nancy made three changes bringing in Matko Miljevic, Zachary Brault Guillard, and Kei Kamara looking for some fresh legs. In the 73rd minute, he made two more changes bringing in Jojea Kwizera and Mason Toye.

In the dying minutes of the game, Toye had an amazing chance to tie the game but Coronel made a game-saving save to keep Montreal off the scoresheet. Moments later the final whistle blew and Montreal’s unbeaten streak had been snapped.

Nancy ” We lacked the finish tonight”

Head coach Wilfried Nancy gave his thoughts on what he saw tonight from his group.

” In terms of decision making we didn’t do well tonight, If we had played at the right tempo we would have been more successful”.

Wanyama ” We didn’t have the cutting edge tonight”

CF Montreal midfielder Victor Wanyama feels tonight’s loss was attributed to a lack of finish in the final third where his team lacked.

” We knew they would come here and defend, try to stay back, and hit us on the counterattack and we conceded early and it was a bit difficult for us”.

CF Montreal will be back in action on Sunday night as they head down the 401 to face their arch rivals TFC at BMO Field.
