Samsonov Staying Put In Toronto With New Contract
Samsonov gets his wish after all. After speaking about wanting to return to the club, Samsonov has a new deal in place. After letting Jack Campbell hit the road to the Edmonton Oilers, new players were needed at the position. Former General Manager Kyle Dubas traded for Matt Murray and signed Ilya Samsonov. The contract was only for one year, but Samsonov played exceptionally well. And now, because of it, he has a new deal.
Samsonov finished the year with a 2.33 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage. In addition, his 18.8 goals saved above expected, led the team. Samsonov was exceptionally well in the high-danger area (.795 save percentage). Overall his level of play was great for an increased pay raise.
Samsonov will always be the goaltender when the team finally gets out of the first round. However, his numbers took a dip. He finished with a .313 goals-against average and a .898 save percentage.
What This Means For The Future
This Ilya Samsonov contract is significant for both sides. Samsonov will look to build upon a strong season. Not to mention, this team under new management will be hungry to get over the hump further. The core group remains intact, and Samsonov will get to backstop it. Lord of questions surround the “core four”, but the goaltending is now solidified. After departing from Washington, he performed well and is the new Leaf’s goalie of the present and future. It is a great day for Samsonov and the team.
