The Toronto Maple Leafs continued a busy 2023 draft day by announcing the re-signing of Right Winger Pontus Holmberg. Brad Treliving made the announcement just ahead of the draft. For the 24-year-old Holmberg, this has to have him feeling good to stay with this organization. The contract is a two-year deal, reportedly worth $1.6 million, so an AAV of $800,000.

Pontus Holmberg Signs a Two-Year Deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs
For Holmberg, he was originally a sixth-round draft pick by the Leafs back in 2018. He had not appeared in the NHL before the 2022-23 season. He had previously played four seasons in Vaxjo HC of the Swedish Hockey League. Then, in 2021-22 he came over to play six games with the Toronto Marlies. This most recent season saw him split time with the Marlies and the Maple Leafs. Holmberg tallied 22 points in 38 games with the Marlies, and 13 points in 37 games with the big club.
What Does This Mean for the Toronto Maple Leafs
The Maple Leafs previously announced the signing of David Kampf, and this is a similar idea. Treliving has identified the need to shore up the role players in the organization. As a result, signing a player like Holmberg makes a lot of sense. He is a product of the Maple Leafs development system, and it is a reward to him and the organization. Furthermore, in terms of Holmberg’s play, he is well-deserving. He came in and did everything that was asked of him. He was over a point a game player in the AHL Calder Cup playoffs with the Marlies. To be exact, he tallied eight points in seven games. He plays with grit too, as he had 44 PIMs in 46 games his last year at playing near home, with Vaxjo HC. Look for him to be exactly what the Leafs need for their bottom six.
