With the large amount of games on tonight’s NHL schedule, it might be hard to know where to start. We at the Last Word on Hockey have helped narrow your focus to our best bets. This round of NHL Predictions will help condense the slate into three best bets and one prop bet of the night.
NHL Predictions
Buffalo Sabres vs Boston Bruins
Head-to-Head: Sabres 0-1 Bruins
TV: MSG Buffalo; NESN; ESPN+e
Our first game of NHL predictions has the Boston Bruins hosting a struggling Buffalo Sabres team. The Sabres did make a small deal to get Eric Robinson from the Columbus Blue Jackets. Devon Levi is projected to be the starter, but always check social media before locking in a fantasy starter. Jeff Skinner has been a bright spot with 11 goals so far this season.
Linus Ullmark is the projected starter in goal for the Bruins, who beat the Sabres, 5-2, in the first meeting of the season. David Pastrnak leads the way in goals (14) and assists (22) for Boston, which has three straight victories. The Bruins are first at killing penalties and second in goals allowed.
Buffalo is struggling mightily and Boston will do it no favours. That sense of doom is already here in Western New York.
Prediction: Bruins win 4-1.
San Jose Sharks vs Detroit Red Wings
Head-to-Head: Sharks 0-0 Red Wings
TV: NBC Sports California; Bally Sports Michigan; ESPN+c
The surging San Jose Sharks travel to Hockeytown to take on the Detroit Red Wings. Mackenzie Blackwood is the expected starter for the Sharks, who have wins in three of the last five games. Fabian Zetterlund is the team’s leading goal scorer with seven goals. San Jose showed it won’t quit after rallying past the New York Islanders last time out.
Detroit will start Ville Husso in between the pipes. The Red Wings have won three straight games and four of the last five. Alex DeBrincat has 13 goals and is looking to heat back up after a fast start. Dylan Larkin has 14 assists, but added so many other parts to his game to be a great captain.
San Jose has been great as of late, but Detroit has been also been solid.
Prediction: Red Wings win 4-2.
Toronto Maple Leafs vs Ottawa Senators
Head-to-Head: Maple Leafs 0-1 Senators
TV: TSN 4 and 5; ESPN+
Our final and featured game of NHL predictions has the Toronto Maple Leafs taking on the Ottawa Senators in the Battle of Ontario. Joseph Woll will get the start for the Leafs in this one. Toronto had its two-game winning streak stopped by Boston the last time out. Auston Matthews leads in goals with 16 while William Nylander has 17 assists. The Leafs dealing with injuries on defence, including losing John Klingberg for the rest of the season.
Ottawa is coming off a solid win over the New York Rangers in the last game. Brady Tkachuk is the team’s leading goal scorer with 13 goals while Tim Stutzle has 19 assists. Ottawa has two straight wins and only given up a pair of goals in those last two victories. Anton Forsberg is the projected starter in the blue paint for the Senators and he’s been solid in recent games.
Rivalry games are always tough to gauge, but the Leafs get the win in a tight and fun affair.
Prediction: Maple Leafs win 5-4.
Prop Bet of the Night
We’ll go with the Los Angeles Kings and Montreal Canadiens game for the prop bet of the evening. Los Angeles have started the season with a 10-0-0 road record, which is the league record. We like the Kings to set the league mark and get the outright win over the Canadiens.
