Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Easton Cowan saw his regular season point streak snapped at 65 games, after staying off the scoresheet in the London Knights’ 3-1 win over the Peterborough Petes on Friday.
Cowan’s point streak isn’t officially recognized by the Ontario Hockey League, as it is a cumulative record over the span of two seasons. The streak began on November 25, 2023, where Cowan recorded points in the final 36 regular season games of the 2023-24 season, winning OHL MVP, before going on to win OHL Playoff MVP. Cowan led the Knights to the Memorial Cup Final last season, where they were defeated by the Saginaw Spirit.
“It was going to happen one day,” Cowan said of the point streak coming to an end via Ryan Pyette of the London Free Press. “I’m just happy we got this win. Good teams find a way.”
Mario Lemieux holds the official CHL record, recording a point in 61 consecutive games for the Laval Voisins in 1983-94 during a tour-de-force season where he recorded 133 goals and 282 points.
“I haven’t been thinking about it,” Cowan said of the streak. “I just play the game. I hit the crossbar there (in the third period). Sometimes, they don’t go your way. It ended and that’s it.”
Cowan is The Leafs Nation’s top-ranked prospect and was a significant part of the past two Canadian teams at the World Juniors. He has recorded 18 goals and 40 points in 30 games for the Knights this season, where he remains one of the OHL’s best players. Cowan will be expected to fight for a roster spot with the Maple Leafs next season, and has been afforded every opportunity to make the team out of training camp the past two years, after being selected with the No. 28 overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft.
All good things must come to an end, but we won’t be forgetting Cowan’s tremendous run at the major junior level anytime soon.
