Matthews has missed the last two games as a result of his injury. While he will not play this weekend, head coach Craig Berube is confident as to his progress.
“He’s doing better, but I would say no to tomorrow, too,” Berube said Friday. “Again, he’s doing better, which is good, but I can’t give you much more than that, to be honest. We’ll update you again tomorrow.”
Matthews will miss Friday’s game against the Detroit Red Wings and Saturday’s game against the Washington Capitals. After Saturday, the Leafs next game will be on Tuesday. We will likely get our next Matthews update on Monday or Tuesday prior to the game.
Matthews Bitten by Injury Bug
The last two months have been filled with injuries for Matthews. In November, Matthews missed nine games as a result of an upper-body injury. Furthermore, it was an injury he has been nursing since the preseason. At the least, Matthews will miss four games as a result of this new injury.
It is unknown if the two injuries are related in any way. However, Berube did acknowledge it was a possibility.
In November, the Maple Leafs went 7-2-0 without Matthews in the lineup. However, they have lost both games in December without Matthews.
The Captain This Season
Matthews has scored 11 goals and has added 12 assists for the Leafs this season. These injuries might prevent Matthews from repeating his 69-goal season from last year, but he has still been an offensive threat on the ice. The Leafs will hope to get their best player back on the ice as soon as possible. When he does return to the ice, the Leafs will hope he stays there.
