After five straight victories, the Leafs have now lost two in a row.
And quite frankly, it hasn’t been pretty —especially Saturday night’s 3-0 loss on home ice against the Vancouver Canucks.
That’s depending on who you ask, of course.
We kicked off the Monday edition of Leafs Morning Take by breaking down some of the news and notes from Leafs practice. Both Jake McCabe and Jani Hakanpaa skated, which obviously is great to see. Furthermore, we discussed Anthony Stolarz’s status. Over the weekend, Craig Berube hinted at the 30-year-old potentially starting to skate again this week. We shall see.
After that, brought to you by Greta Bar, we got into a full recap of the Vancouver game. Incredibly, Toronto only mustered 20 shots on goal. Additionally, the Canucks have every excuse to pick it in for that game (travel woes), and weirdly enough, it was the team that was home and rested that couldn’t get up for it. Honestly, most of our conversation was about Mitch Marner’s post-game comments where he shared that he felt that the team “played good.” Delusional, right? For the record, Berube and Chris Tanev didn’t mince words stating that the effort just wasn’t good enough. Additionally, we also addressed Toronto’s new look lines from practice. Believe it or not, Steven Lorentz was taking spins with Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner. Wowzers.
At any rate, courtesy Charm Diamond Centres, TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger dropped by the show. We talked about Toronto’s terrible power play, Marc Savard’s job status, Marner’s weird post-game comments, the trade deadline, and the possible timeline for Stolarz’s return to the lineup.
Meantime, The Nation Network’s Irfaan Gaffar, who covers the Canucks for Canucks Army, stopped by, too. He weighed in on Saturday night’s game. Over and above that, Irf gave some insight on the Miller/Pettersson beef, if the Leafs could get on a potential Miller trade, and what he’s seen from Tanev and Oliver Ekman-Larsson so far in Toronto.
