Toronto Blue Jays’ Will Wagner’s role is becoming more impactful, and signs are showing that he could be better suited at third base. Following the Blue Jays’ tough loss on Opening Day, shaking up the lineup was necessary. Wagner started at third base for the season’s second game, and it worked out well. Wagner also got to play third in camp, and he displayed good defensive skills. What makes him a sound defender is that he utilizes his hands well (sustaining good glove work).
While his arm strength will be a test for him at third base, he possesses solid groundwork defensively. His defensive contributions have demonstrated how he’s able to make reliable routine plays.
The Case for Wagner Playing Third
While Ernie Clement was a Gold Glove finalist at the position last season, shaking up lineups and positions is necessary. Especially when your team is facing struggles, making adjustments is significant. The hot corner is a role that requires accuracy and agility. Wagner has demonstrated how he performs well on the bases with good instincts. While he still needs to develop his speed and arm strength, he’s already showcased how he’s been able to throw with power and accuracy to first base. Wagner’s play at third during camp against the Tampa Bay Rays on March 20th was reminiscent of how Josh Donaldson used to make plays for the Blue Jays. The fact that he’s already showing development and progression with arm strength and adapting makes him an exciting player to watch.
Wagner’s Skills at the Hot Corner
He defies the odds, making him an impactful player for the Blue Jays. In addition, having Clement come in games as a pinch hitter or DH would function well. The Blue Jays did this in Friday’s game against the Orioles, and Clement scored a double. Overall, Wagner looked composed and comfortable playing third. Wagner also showcased his charisma at third by making a dynamite play to get Tyler O’Neill out at second base in Friday night’s 8-2 victory over the Orioles. He reacted quickly to the play, which was also another good sign from the rookie. It looked like a play that a Gold Glove winner makes at third. Smart situational plays are right up his alley, and while he’s likely to be moved around to help fill different infield positions, he could get more starts at third if he continues to impress.
The rookies are making it hard to keep them out of the lineup early this season. Wagner has continued to impress the Blue Jays. Firstly, in his MLB debut last season, he recorded three hits, and now he’s developing as a solid potential third baseman. He’s unlocking a lot of promise and potential, making him a valuable asset at third. Wagner will need to continue demonstrating his development if he wants to earn more time at third. But so far, Wagner’s proven to demonstrate quality skills at third base.
