Series sweeps have been few and far between for the Toronto Blue Jays this season.
However, they defeated the Los Angeles Angels 9-2, taking all three games from the Dodgers’ little brother, moving their record to 57-64.
The Blue Jays took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning, as Ernie Clement hit his seventh home run of the season, before Vladimir Guerrero Jr. cashed in a run thanks to a single the following inning.

Toronto essentially won the game in the top of the fifth, as Daulton Varsho hit his 15th home run of the season, smashing the ball to right field to score three more runs and make it 6-0. Matt Thaiss hit a home run in the Angels’ half of the inning, before Toronto restored their six-run lead thanks to a Leo Jiménez sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth.

Can anyone slow Vladimir Guerrero Jr. down? It doesn’t look like it, as he hit his 25th home run of the season in the top of the ninth to give Toronto a 9-1 lead. The Angels scored on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth, but fell 9-2.

Things worth mentioning…
José Berríos had a great outing, finishing with a line of 7 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K with a home run given up to bring his season ERA to 3.85. More of this.
The Jays used two relievers, Brendon Little and Tommy Nance. Little allowed a hit, a walk, and a hit by pitch, but didn’t allow an earned run in his inning of work. Nance gave up an earned run in his inning of work.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is one of the league’s best hitters this season, and needs to be paid as soon as possible. After Wednesday’s game, where he had three hits, Guerrero Jr. slashing .323/.394/.557 with 25 home runs in 525 plate appearances for a 167 wRC+. His wRC+ is slightly higher than the total he had in 2021 (166)
Daulton Varsho also had a three-hit performance, hitting his 18th double, 15th home run, and a single. Ernie Clement hit his second triple and seventh home run, with those three players combining for all eight of Toronto’s hits. They also struck out 13 times, but you’ll take that any day of the week when you score nine runs.
Up next: The Blue Jays have an off-day on Thursday, but head to Wrigley Field to take on the Chicago Cubs on Friday, with that game being on Apple TV. Yariel Rodríguez is slated to start that game, opposed by the Cubs’ Kyle Hendricks.
