It’s the start of another week. We have our second last-Monday game today. Next Monday is an off-day, and the season is over in three weeks.
Shi Davidi has a post up talking to Bo Bichette who says he would like to stay with the Jays, win with the Jays and be a teammate of Vladimir Guerrero for his career.
“When I had time to think about what I want, basically, my ultimate goal really is to play with Vladdy (Guerrero Jr.) forever, to win a championship with him and to do that with this organization,” the two-time all-star shortstop said during an interview at Truist Park before heading out for a rehab assignment with triple-A Buffalo that starts Tuesday. “I’m 100 per cent committed to doing whatever it takes to accomplish those things. That’s where I’m at.”
I always take players’ statements with a grain of salt. And, of course, some people keep telling us that Bo wants to leave. People think they can tell stuff by body language, the look on his face, or whatever.
But I’m sure Bo would like to stay with the Jays. It is comfortable for him here. He knows about the area, the park, the spring training facility. Being comfortable is worth a lot.
Would he like to stay here so much that he would give the team a discount? That’s the real question. I tend to think players will always go where the most money. The money a team will give them equates to their value.
Can the team sign both Bo and Vlad? That’s a question. They are up near the cap now, and they need to add players.
And does the team see his value the same way he does? Right now, I can’t see them wanting to give him the same contract as Vlad. I’d be good with ten or twelve years at $30 million plus a year.
Bo, I’m not sure I’d be comfortable giving Bo more than five years.
And I don’t know if Bo would be happy getting a shorter contract than Vlad. I think he would want the same.
On top of that, I’m not sure that the leg troubles he’s had this season won’t be chronic. I don’t know that he won’t have more seasons where he misses half the season or more.
It is hard not to overvalue a player’s current season. In the past, when Bo had a better season than Vlad, people said they should trade Vlad and keep Bo. Now Vlad is doing better, and we hear the opposite.
I have questions about Bo’s future, but I think he’s a better choice, going forward, than Leo Jimenez
Let’s do a poll:
Gregor Chisholm talks about how the Jays see Chad Green as an essential part of the bullpen despite his troubles of late.
I have no doubt this is true. They have many problems in the bullpen, but Green isn’t one of them. He’s one of about three guys I’m pretty sure about.
Enjoy your Monday.
