The Jays have made a roster move:
- Luis Frías, the RHP we picked up off waivers from the Diamondbacks, gets the callup. He has a 0 ERA in 8.1 innings with the Bisons since we grabbed him August 10th. But then he had a 9.95 ERA in 6.1 innings with the Diamondbacks earlier in the season. He was #10 on the Diamondbacks MLB Pipeline list. This is what they said:
Frias is the epitome of a power pitcher with his combination of physicality and stuff. He generates big-time velocity with a lightning-quick arm, touching 99 mph with a fastball that sits in the mid-to-upper 90s deep in starts. A spike curveball gives Frias a second plus pitch, thrown with huge vertical depth and hard, 12-to-6 downer action that befuddles same-sided hitters. Frias’ enormous hands allowed him to add a split-changeup in 2019. The pitch registers in the upper 80s and bottoms out as it nears the plate, giving him a potential weapon against left-handed hitters.
Frias is an imposing presence on the mound and much heavier than his listed weight of 180 pounds, so he’ll need to keep his conditioning in check going forward. That Frias is athletic for his size and has a very loose arm action helps mitigate some concerns about his high-effort delivery, and club officials are more optimistic than ever about his long-term starter potential after the right-hander’s breakout performance.
- Brandon Eisert was recalled on September 1st but didn’t get into a game. He’s been up a few times this year but has only pitched in two games, for a total of 4.2 innings. He never seems to get a chance with the Jays,
I am curious to see Frias, presuming the team decides to use him.
Yesterday, the Jays grabbed Emmanuel Ramirez off waivers from the Marlins. They DFAed Palolo Espino to make room on the 40-man.
Ramirez had a 6.97 ERA in 20.2 innings with the Marlins this year, but he did have 21 strikeouts. He did okay in Jacksonville, the Marlins’ Triple-A team, with a 3.75 ERA in 40.2 innings, 16 walks, and 51 strikeouts.
RHP José Cuas was DFAed to make room.
