The Blue Jays are going streaking.
On Friday evening, the Toronto Blue Jays played in their City Connect jerseys for the first time, and in turn, the fans were treated to a 14 inning game. Thankfully, the Blue Jays managed to get the win, beating the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-3.
Veteran outfielder Andrew McCutchen opened the scoring in the top of the fifth with a single that scored Nick Gonzales (and moved former Blue Jay Rowdy Tellez to third). However, the Blue Jays scored a run of their own in the bottom of the seventh, as Daniel Vogelbach doubled on a fortunate play as Ji Hwan Bae lost the ball in the sky, allowing George Springer to score.

The Pirates would score with a sac fly in the top of the 11th, but the Blue Jays would have an answer as Springer singled in a run to tie the game in the bottom of the 11th. The teams exchanged runs with sacrifice flies in the 12th inning, while the 13th inning also saw no scoring.

It wasn’t until the 14th inning that the game ended, as Davis Schneider hit his seventh home run of the season, an oppo-taco, to send Blue Jays’ fans home happy with a season-high fourth straight win.

Things worth mentioning…
José Berríos had his typical great game, finishing with a line of 7 P, 6 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K to bring his season ERA to 2.78. Not much else to say other than he’s been lights out this season.

Génesis Cabrera had a terrific game as well, as he struck out three batters in the inning and a third. It could’ve been seen as a questionable decision to go from one lefty to another lefty once Tim Mayza allowed the runner to move to third in the top of the 13th, but Cabrera immediately struck out two. Cabrera has more swing and miss, hence why this move was made.
George Springer had a whale of a game, especially in extra innings. Of course, we already looked at his game-tying single, but he also made a terrific catch that saved a run. He’s been coming around since dropping in the lineup, it’s good to see.

This was the longest Jays’ game since September 23, 2019. That was before the ghost runner rule was in effect and went 15 deep. It was actually former top prospect Anthony Alford that walked it off.

The Blue Jays only had six hits in the game. Davis Schneider hit a walk-off home run, while Justin Turner and Daniel Vogelbach hit doubles. George Springer, Ernie Clement, and Kevin Kiermaier all had singles.
Up next: The Blue Jays will have a chance to win their second series in a row, and their third in four series with a win on Saturday as they’ll host the Pirates for the second of three. Yusei Kikuchi will start the game for the Blue Jays, who are just two games below .500 now.
