For the first time in May, the Blue Jays have won a series opener.
On Monday, the Blue Jays headed to Baltimore to face the not-so-trash American League East birds, the Baltimore Orioles. However, Toronto came out on top in extra innings, defeating the reigning American League East division winners 3-2 in extras.
It was a typical start for the Jays, as the Orioles took the lead with an Adley Rutschman home run in the bottom of the fourth. The catcher is going to be one of the best in the league, if he isn’t already.

However, the Blue Jays answered in the top of the sixth, as Daniel Vogelbach hit an RBI single with a liner that landed in centre field, making it a 1-1 game.
It didn’t take long for the Orioles to regain that lead, as Rutschman went deep for the second time to make it 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth.

Once again, the Blue Jays had an answer though, as Daulton Varsho hit his seventh home run in the top of the eighth to tie the game at two.

Varsho also had the game-winning RBI, as he hit into a ground out where the Orioles were unable to turn the double play, giving the Jays a 3-2 lead in the top. All Romano had to do was pitch another inning, where he generated a flyout, strike out, a walk, and a ground out for the Blue Jays’ win. Add in a terrific catch, and it was a pretty good day at the office for Varsho.

Things worth mentioning…
It was a great bounce back game for José Berríos, who finished with a line of 7 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K with two home runs given up, both to Adley Rutschman. After his last outing where he gave up eight earned runs in three and two thirds innings, this was a nice return to form.

Yimi García is elite, as he struck out the side in his inning of work to bring his season ERA to 0.59. If the Jays end up selling at the deadline, García will get them a good haul.

Bo Bichette is starting to turn his season around, as he had three hits, all singles, in Monday’s game. His batting average is still at a low .218, but he’s in the midst of a six-game hit streak and looking like his old self.
Ernie Clement also had a multi-hit performance as he had two singles. He’s hit .270 this season and with plus defence at multiple positions, it’s hard to take him out of the lineup.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had just one hit in today’s game, which doesn’t sound great, but he also had three walks because no pitcher in his right mind wants to pitch to him at the moment.
Up next: The Blue Jays have a chance to win their first series since April 19-21 series against the San Diego Padres. They’ll play at 6:35 PM ET tomorrow against Baltimore with Chris Bassitt taking the mound against Kyle Bradish.
