If you need a baseball game to fall asleep to, Saturday’s game was a good candidate.
The Toronto Blue Jays took on the Atlanta Braves Saturday afternoon, with the two teams drawing the game at one apiece. Not a whole lot happened, but let’s take a look at how the runs were scored.
In the top of the fifth, Rainer Nuñez drove in a run thanks to a bases-loaded ground out for the first out of the inning. Unfortunately, the next two batters popped out and flew out respectively to end what was the Blue Jays’ best chance to score multiple runs.
The Braves scored their run in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a home run from Luke Williams, tying the game up at one.
Pretty boring game after all is said and done.
Takeaways…
The Blue Jays totaled five hits in this game, none of the extra-base variety. Davis Schneider had two of those singles but was thrown out trying to advance to second base in his first plate appearance of the game. Ernie Clement, Michael Stefanic, and Myles Straw had the other hits.
Speaking of Straw, he’s had a good start to his Spring Training as he’s slashing .455/.417/.455 with five singles in 12 plate appearances. At worst, he’s a solid defensive option in September on a not-so-team-friendly contract.
Although this game was a snoozefest, it was a good day for Blue Jays pitchers – and there were a lot of them. The Jays used eight pitchers as this was a bullpen day, with Jacob Barnes getting the start and walking a batter in his inning of work. Richard Lovelady was the player to give up the home run, while he, Zach Pop, and Mason Fluharty each had one strikeout.
Hopefully, Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies will be far more interesting. Max Scherzer is expected to start the game against former Blue Jays Taijuan Walker. Bowden Francis is also expected to pitch in the game.
