Vladimir Guerrero’s contract is signed, so the physical must have happened.
There are a few interesting details about the contract:
- None of the money is deferred, there are no opt-outs, and there is a full no-trade clause. So he’s very likely to be with the Blue Jays for the full 14 years.
- $325 million of the contract is a ‘signing bonus’, which will be spread across the length of the contract, with $20 million of it coming this year within 30 days (which doesn’t affect our luxury tax) before the contract takes effect. Apparently, that lessens the team’s luxury tax hit. Vlad’s luxury tax hit will be $35.71 million a year.
- And the signing bonus is paid out where the player lives. It will save Vlad in state taxes. He lives in Florida, where there is no state tax
- The other $175 will be regular pay.
- However, the signing bonus has to be paid even if there is a player strike or a lockout, which is fairly likely.
I wonder if SB would give me a signing bonus?
