Thirteen games left in this mess of a season.
And it is Roberto Clemente Day in the MLB. Clemente died on New Years Eve 1972 in a plane crash. He was delivering aid packages to Managua, Nicaragua, which had a major earthquake just before Christmas. Clemente found out that the Nicarguan government were blocking aid to the area (stealing it for themselves). Clemente figured his presence could help get it to the people that needed it. But the place was overloaded and crashed into the ocean on the way.
He ended up with exactly 3000 hits, 240 home runs and a .317/.359/.475 batting line. He was also a terrific fielder.
It’s pretty amazing that Vlad reached 500 RBI before his 26th birthday. His dad made it before his 27th birthday and ended up with 1496. I’d still bet on the Hall of Famer ending with the better stats, but it will be interesting to see if Jr. can catch up to Sr.
I imagine Bo Bichette will be activated soon. He’s 4 for 14 with the Bisons, with only one extra-base hit, but I think the team would like him to play the final ten games of the season in the majors.
Tomorrow is an off-day for the Jays. I think he’ll be up for the series with the Rangers.
Springer gets the day off, as does Kirk. Lukes leads off and plays center field.
