It’s a matter of when, not if, today’s prospect makes the big leagues.
This is Blue Jays Nation’s annual Pre-Season Prospect Countdown, this time looking at the top 40 prospects in the organization. We’ll look at the player’s stats, my observations, and other publication’s scouting reports if available.
Let’s take a look at our 28th-ranked prospect, Dasan Brown.
Getting to know Dasan Brown…
Position: Outfield
Bats: Right
Born: September 25, 2001
Acquired: 3rd-round, 2019 draft
Previous ranking: 22nd
The Toronto Blue Jays selected Brown of high school in 2019, with the Oakville native making his professional debut the same season. With their rookie team, he slashed .222/.444/.356 with no home runs in 53 plate appearances.
Brown struggled in Single-A in 2021, slashing .212/.310/.323 with four home runs in 226 plate appearances for a 79 wRC+. However, he returned to the level in 2022, where he slashed .279/.369/.450 with four home runs in 162 plate appearances for a 135 wRC+. Brown was called up to High-A Vancouver where he slashed .283/.383/.420 with two home runs in 176 plate appearances, along with three additional home runs in three postseason games.
Unfortunately, Brown struggled again in 2023, slashing .218/.309/.315 with eight home runs in 329 plate appearances for a 74 wRC+ with the Canadians. Brown rebounded nicely in 2024 though, at least at first, as he slashed .257/.363/.411 with eight home runs in 329 plate appearances for the Canadians for a 121 wRC+.
The outfielder was called up to the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats to end the season, where he slashed .217/.284/.302 with no home runs in 119 plate appearances for a 72 wRC+. For the season, Brown slashed .246/.342/.381 with eight homers in 448 plate appearances with a 10 BB% and a 25.2 K%.
It’s been a very stop/start career with his bat, but according to MLB Pipeline’s mid-season update, his best features are his 80-grade speed and strong centre field defence. The 23-year-old ranked as their 23rd-best prospect. Thanks to his speed, he’ll more than likely find himself on a big league roster but his role depends on whether or not he can find consistency with the bat.
