The Toronto Blue Jays dropped the Saturday afternoon contest to the Baltimore Orioles by a score of 5-4 even though the team out-hit Baltimore by five. This loss brings them to 8-7 on the year.
To avoid dropping to .500, the Blue Jays are sending veteran José Berríos to the mound. Berríos last faced Baltimore on Opening Day, where the Orioles tagged him for six runs, nine hits (three home runs), with two walks. The right-hander will be looking to avoid a repeat of that performance as the Jays get set to face Cade Povich on the mound.
The left-hander was the only Orioles starter not to face the Jays on the opening weekend, as he would make the O’s home debut on the Monday instead. This season, Povich has authored a 3.48 ERA through 10 1/3 innings while striking out 12 compared to two walks and 17 hits. Povich allowed 12 hits in his last outing against the Royals, and while he surrendered four runs, only one was earned. He will be looking to gain his first win of the season and hasn’t pitched since April 6th.
In other Jays news, Anthony Santander collected his first home run of the season yesterday, ironically, back at Camden Yards. Bowden Francis carried another no-hitter into the fifth inning before a two-run home run to Kjerstad broke open the scoring, a similar result that has followed Francis and his no-hit bids as of late.
