The Jays signed Chad Green to a rather convoluted, choose-your-own-adventure contract before the 2023 season.
They chose to take the two-year, 21-million-dollar option after the 2023 season. His contract expires after the 2025 season.
Green is a right-handed reliever who turns 34 in May.
He threw 12 innings for us at the end of the 2023 season. Last year, he played in 53 games, 53.1 innings, with a 3.21 ERA, 17 saves, 7 holds, and 3 blown saves. Batters hit .216/.271/.379 against him.
When he was signed, we were sold on the idea that he could be a multiple-inning reliever, but, like most of the guys we hear, he could throw multiple innings; when the season started, he was a one-inning guy. Chad got five outs once and four outs ten times. But then, he fell into the role of closer when Jordan Romano went on the IL.
He was fine in the closer role, but I’m happy that the team has signed Trevor Hoffman to take the closer role. I like Green better as a setup man.
Green was a two-pitch pitcher last year: a Four-Seamer (60%, 95.5 mph on average) and a slider (39.3%). Well, there were six cutters.
At 34 he doesn’t have all that many seasons left, but then he had Tommy John just a couple of years ago, which might buy him an extra year or two.
Steamer thinks he’ll make 66 relief appearances and throw 66 innings with a 4.06 ERA and 5 saves.
