Blue Jays 3 Red Sox 6
We haven’t had a ‘bad’ game in a while, so we almost forgot what they are like. This was a bad game.
We had ten hits and three walks, and we had many, many base runners, but we either left them on the bases or threw them out. 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position, but it was worse than that.
- Vlad was thrown out at second, trying to stretch a single into a double in the first inning. It wasn’t close.
- Joey Loperfido was thrown out at the plate trying to score from first on a Will Wagner double. It was close. I didn’t like the send, but Joey made it close, and there were two outs so that it might have been worth trying. That was in the second inning.
- Ernie Clement was thrown out at the plate, trying to score from third on a fly ball to medium right. It wasn’t close and a terrible send. That was in the third inning. Sometimes, I we think fly balls are deeper than we think because the right and left field walls are pretty close compared to most parks.
That was just the first three innings.
And we left guys on the bases:
- In the first: Two.
- In the second: One.
- In the third: One. But we scored a run on an Addison Barger sac fly.
- Four: One, with a double play in there.
- Fifth: Two.
- Sixth: None, but Clement hit into a double play (very nicely turned by the Red Sox) just before Will Wagner hit his first MLB home run.
- Seventh: One.
None in the eighth and ninth. And Varsho had a solo home run.
Will Wagner had a good day at the plate, going 3 for 4, with a home run and a double. Varsho (single and homer) and Vlad (single and double) had two hits.
Springer (who had a walk) and Clement were the only Jays without a hit.
We also had a couple of hit batters. Springer was hit (well brushed) on the back of the calf. Clement took one off the hand.
Yariel Rodriguez didn’t have a good game. He gave up eight hits and six runs, with just three strikeouts in 5.0.
Tommy Nance pitched two scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Erik Swanson pitched a perfect eight with three strikeouts.
Yesterday, the Red Sox booted the ball around the entire game; today, they played good defense.
Jay of the Day: Wagner (.091 WPA).
The Other Award: Rodriguez (-.255), Springer (-.099), Kirk (-.083), and I’m giving one to Vlad (.015) for being thrown out at second. Giving away an out in the first inning may have changed the game.
Tomorrow we have Chris Bassitt (9-12, 4.41) vs. Brayan Bello (11-6, 4.95). Let’s start another win streak.
